New Army Start “Beastmen”

I have recently started putting together a Beastmen army.  I don’t think it will win any tournaments, but it has been pretty fun to play. I want to actually build my army correctly, so I am planning on not buying more stuff until I finish painting the box of Gors I have already started on.  I also have a Orc chariot I plan on converting, and a box of the new Ungors.  This way if I get bored of it, I won’t have a lot of money in models I don’t even have assembled.  I don’t plan on picking up any GW stuff at all until I get through with this batch.

What follows is the list of the stuff I plan on starting with.  The massive amount of Core seems necessary if the rumors about 8th are true.  Truthfully, I like to play a horde army that feels like one as well.

Clan Verms

I just got the new Skaven book yesterday, and have been looking over it quite a bit.  It definately seems to be a very solid book, but most likely not too crazy.  There is some stuff that is really good, and a lot of stuff that is just really neat.  All the Plague Monk stuff being specials limits the amount of crazyness, but whatever.  I think you will see the Hellpit Abomination in every tournament list, but at least it is a lot of points.

The list I am planning on doing will be Clan Verms.  They are like Moulder, but obsessed with bugs and other creepy gross stuff.  I want my giant rat packs to have a mix of insects, worms, and rats.  I guess I should run lots of swarms and rat ogres as well.  This is the list I have wrote up to try out.

I really always liked playing a Grey Seer, but I guess it would make more sense to play a Warlord on Bonebreaker Rat Ogre in my 2250.  I want to play bigger units of Giant Rats, so I guess I will once I find a way to convert them the way I want.  The Hell Pit Abomination is a must, as it even fits the theme, and the Plague Furnace is very likely.

The Sickness

Unfortunately, there has not been much progress on my Skaven as of yet.  Between work and being sick most of Thursday and Friday, I haven’t been able to gather the willpower to pick up my paintbrush this week.  The new Skaven book came out this Saturday, so I suppose I should get myself a copy of that.

I did get a copy of the Earthdawn Player’s Guide and the Earthdawn GM’s Guide.  I have always been a fan of the old FASA roleplaying games.  They split the old corebook into two books and made them both nicer.  There are some system updates that are pretty nice.  They changed what dice you get a certain steps mainly by removing the d4′s.  Another nice change is that now character creation is based on a point buy system where each race gives you a base statline you spend points to improve.  I am a big fan of balance in combat oriented roleplaying games, so this was a nice touch as well.

They added some new rules to do combat on a hexgrid. I will have to try them out but I love tactical combat like this, so I think it will be alright. Once I start playing it some I am sure more changes will come to light.

My favorite change is using a lot of the first edition art over again.  I always hated that every archetype in the second edition book was some race playing against type.  Earthdawn is definitely the fantasy game where it is the most reasonable, but I never bought Windling Warrior as a good example of a crazed berserk killer.

A New Beginning

When I started playing Warhammer a few years ago, I always wanted to play Skaven.  The idea of zany ratmen with weapons that were dangerous to everyone really seemed like something I wanted to play.  Pretty much all of the races looked really good, but after looking into it Skaven where just so overwhelmingly expensive to play.  I guess it wouldn’t have been so bad if I wanted to play the Skyre Army of Doom, but hoard armies rule. The skaven I wanted were just to expensive to try out in a game I had never really played before.

I ended up going with Ogres for my first army.  They had just been released, and an army of fat guys who want to eat everything seemed like it would be fun to play.  I have never regretted my Orges.  They are still one of my most fun armies to play even though my record with them is abysmal.  (Rank bonus and outnumbering, who knew)  The release of 7th Edition and a cap on the overkill bonus was the best thing that ever happend to my Tyrant.  Dwarf Lords getting +15 overkill on me in a challenge really made some games an uphill battle.

I started picking up stuff for other armies, and eventually had a few.  Dark Elves and Chaos are some of my favorite, and Empire was my first real attempt at a hoard army.  I would get a box of Skaven stuff every so often, but never anything to much.  One day I looked over my Skaven and I realised, “Damn, I actually have a lot of this stuff.”  I had about 1500 points.  I started playing some games, and building it up.  The army was really fun, but at this point I didn’t ever really consider magnetic bases. I knew that they existed but I never really thought about doing them myself.  I ended up playing Ogres much more than Skaven, because it would take 30-45 min to set up my 2250.

The new Skaven book comes out Saturday, so I have decided that I am actually going to finish my Skaven army.  I don’t need too much of the new stuff because I now have 3500 points, but my hatred  of metal models is requireing my to get the new Screaming Bell and Stormvermin.  I still like the old ones, but will never play the models again.

Painting this army will be horrible. I have a few painted characters and about a half finished unit of Clanrats. Oh boy.
